Me, Sarah Hudson and Lanae Cable - shot by Te Aho Jordan for He Kakano Ahau
Kauae Raro Research Collective are Sarah Hudson and Lanae Cable, a couple of Ngāti Awa, Ngāti Pūkeko, Ngāi Tūhoe artists, researchers and mums based in Whakatāne, Aotearoa.
We love long walks at the water's edge with our eyes fixed to the ground, deep-diving into kōrero about whenua and whakapapa, and getting our hands dirty.
Established in 2019, Kauae Raro are dedicated to researching whenua as an art material, a component of ceremony, for personal adornment and as rongoā. We publish elements of our research journey at our website He Kapunga Oneone and over on Instagram.
Our mahi is focused on the retention and promotion of mātauranga Māori around this beautiful resource at our feet - a taonga to which we belong to as tangata whenua.
Te Mata Tūroa o Papa: This Natural World
Kua āhua mai ēnei mahi toi i te takoto me ngā tauira o te mata tūroa o Papatūānuku. Kua āta titiro ngā ringatoi, me ngā kaihanga, ki te taiao, ā, kua kitea te rerehua me ngā tini painga o te ao tūroa.
In 2023 we were commissioned to produce a whenua archive to be held at our national museum, Te Papa Tongarewa. We deposited unprocessed earth and stones, processed powdered pigments, whenua water-colour paints, and ochre-stained textile samples. A selection of the archive is currently being displayed as a part of the exhibition, Te Mata Tūroa o Papa: This Natural World. The rest of the archive will be housed at Te Papa and available for any iwi, students, artists or researchers to access to view.
When we first started our research, we longed to access an archive of whenua to study. We are proud to be able to offer an archive of whenua that we whakapapa to, and land that has been gifted to us by tangata whenua around Aotearoa.
