Caselberg Residency 2022

During the sunny Autumn months, my whānau and I resided in Whakaohorahi, Broad Bay, Ōtepoti. Supported by the Caselberg Trust, Creative NZ and Manatū Taonga, I developed a solo exhibition re:place for Blue Oyster Project Space, organised the first Kauae Raro national Māori earth pigment symposium and produced a series of educational videos to help others engage with land as an art material.

  • This centres around the Tūhoe concept matemateāone, a term used to express a sense of longing for and belonging to the land. Sometimes it is translated as ‘being wrapped in the earth’, a deeply reciprocal philosophy of creation narratives, kaitiakitanga/ stewardship, and acknowledging eventually we all will return to the soil.

ODT article: Colours from the whenua

  • Ko te whenua te toto o te tangata, ko te tangata te toto o te whenua. In May 2022 Kauae Raro Research Collective held a wānanga in Ōtepoti for 20 Māori artists from all across Aotearoa. This even was supported by Te Papa Tongarewa and Manatū Taonga.

  • These instructional videos were made possible by an amazing creative team beyond my capabilities: Lachie McLaren helped with the instructional design, Anituatua Black translated the reo Māori, Kahu Kutia is the voice-over artist and Rachel Anson brought everything together with videography and editing. This collaboration was supported with funding from Creative NZ
