The Hill Inside is the simultaneous viewing of Remember and Reconnect. Developed over the course of 2023 exploring the customary Māori proverb/ whakatāuki ‘e kore a Parawhenuamea e haere ki te kore a Rakahore’ – freshwater does not go without rocks.
Reconnect was commissioned by Hāmiora Bailey of Tāmaki Auckland Pride to celebrate the ways in which the continuation of customary Māori practices can strengthen our ties with the land, the atua and each other. Remember was commissioned by Sophie O’Brien of Bundanon Art Museum for the exhibition The Polyphonic Sea. It documents the ritual of returning artworks made of earth, back to the earth. Together these pieces discuss the relationship of guidance, longevity and reciprocity.
